Icons for Ocarina & Wind Waker buttons

I've been thinking about adding images of A,C-buttons and the four Windwaker directions as images, so the button combinations look much better. Is this possible without too much effort? I am not really a wiki-expert, so if anybody can shed some light on the situation that would be nice.--Iron Knuckle 09:35, 12 February 2006 (EST)

Do you have good images of them? I have some extracted from TWW, but they're mono-crome (black outline with white or clear color), which some might not prefer. We do have ◀, etc., but if you get the go to add the buttons, there can be templates, so that {{c up}} shows the image for the C-Up button. --Lesoria 12:47, 12 February 2006 (EST)

They do not necessarily be from the actual game, but a yellow button with triangle looks better than ◀ IMO. I can try to get some good button images. I'll put up a test image here if that is okay with you.--Iron Knuckle 14:28, 12 February 2006 (EST)

It turns out that I don't have the images I thought I have. What I have are A, B, the D-pad, and the C-analog, but those don't look as good what you're proposing.

Whatever you come up with, it'll be easy to use thanks to templates =) --Lesoria 14:40, 12 February 2006 (EST)

So what do you think of it?--Iron Knuckle 15:47, 12 February 2006 (EST)

One thing to consider is how it would look used on a page. Which size would it appear? 16px? 20px? Does it look good at this size?

I have a pet peeve preference of PNG over GIF, because GIF limits the colors you can use. I'm not sure if that's hurting this icon, because I don't know the original source, so I can't comment on that.

I tend to be extremely critical over the tiniest things with small icons, so don't take anything personally, and I'm trying to not be too critical here.

--Lesoria 15:55, 12 February 2006 (EST)

Actually I can fully agree with that, but in this case gif is okay for the vectorized image only has 16 colors, I had to convert it back into a bitmap or else it won't display on the web. Of course I know about the artifacts, and I can work those away. This was only an initial draft. And I am still learning to work with vector graphics, they're pretty cool for you can zoom in indefinitely if need be, without losing resolution. Personally I like the 20px better, but I think people with huge monitors will find it small (There is always something to critize about). If you like this idea I can work out a vector image for the A Button and TWW baton directions as well. It takes some effort to convert the image, so that's why I am asking in advance. --Iron Knuckle 16:01, 12 February 2006 (EST)

And that is why we need SVG support! then it can resize nicely no matter the user's browser size. As for GIFs, maybe I'm still bitter over all the patent troubles of the past. But I still think PNG's better in all situations. Too bad there's no browser support for APNG (animated PNGs), so I'd use that for animated sprites... --Lesoria 16:05, 12 February 2006 (EST)

Hey, adding the other buttons would be a nice idea for making the "Relevant Quote" selections look more realistic... Oh well, first I'll work out the A button and the other C buttons. BTW, do you have a clear image of a baton direction? One side is enough for the rest can be obtained by rotating.--Iron Knuckle 16:14, 12 February 2006 (EST)

So, what do you say about these 5: (BTW to comfort you they're png :)

They are great! I've just added them to the Minuet of Forest article.--Arturo 09:37, 13 February 2006 (EST)

Ehmm... Lesoria are you going to make the template for the Icon Buttons? I don't mind doing this myself, but you seem to be better at this than me.--Iron Knuckle 17:18, 14 February 2006 (EST)

Sorry, I've been really busy lately. We need to decide on what to name the templates. For example:

  • c up
  • c down
  • c left
  • c right
  • a

Here, the "a" template seems out of place. Maybe:

  • n64 c up
  • n64 c down
  • n64 c left
  • n64 c right
  • n64 a

This would allow for GameCube ones for Wind Waker.

Or maybe someone has a better idea for template names?

--Lesoria 12:24, 15 February 2006 (EST)

That's okay, the second option sounds good IMO. I already named the icons with N64 at the end to make the distinction as well.

Baton N.pngBaton R.pngBaton D.pngBaton L.pngBaton U.png I'll add the other baton directions later. --Iron Knuckle 14:33, 15 February 2006 (EST)

So, how do these template names sound?

Ocarina/Majora's

  • N64 c up
  • N64 c down
  • N64 c left
  • N64 c right
  • N64 a

Wind Waker

  • Baton Up
  • Baton Down
  • Baton Left
  • Baton Right
  • Baton Neutral

Should the Wind Waker ones have "c" in them? I can't remember how the controls for it go.

I suggest "baton" rather than "gc" because we don't know if TP will have an Ocarina or something which may use different graphics for the keys to press.

--Lesoria 16:04, 15 February 2006 (EST)

Indeed, I already called the baton direction in a similar fashion! I think the templates are good, but perhaps r,l,u,d&n should give the directions, but that is just because I like typing as little as possible. BTW I added all baton directions, but I am not entirely happy how this ended up. I'll take a better look at it again... --Iron Knuckle 08:03, 16 February 2006 (EST)

Hello? Is anybody still there? I would like to share that I heard that wikipedia now has .svg format support, or so I heard! Which means that Vector Images are possible.--Iron Knuckle 11:02, 22 February 2006 (EST)
