Canon sources are sources of information provided by Nintendo. Most canon information comes from the video games and manuals.
Levels of Canon
Sometimes two canon sources will contradict one another.
| Source 1 | Source 2 | Stronger Canon |

| Japanese text | Non-Japanese text | Japanese text. Any other text is a translation from the original Japanese, or a translation of a translation, and information is often lost in the translation. |
| Instruction booklet | Game dialogue | Game dialogue. The instruction booklet may have been written by someone not involved with the storyline of the game itself. |
| Original game | Re-released game | Re-released game. Often a re-release will have improved translations and updates information to better suit the overall storyline. |
